Intro:

In the current rapidly changing landscape of global economics, sustainability has become a driving force for both environmental and financial success. Nino Tronchetti Provera, a veteran entrepreneur and the founder of Ambienta, a private equity firm, firmly believes that sustainable European companies, in the moment they are managed effectively, "will have higher growth rates and better margins than others." Ambienta, is on a mission to seek out such enterprises across Europe, with a focus on various sectors, including water, circular economy, education, and food.

Ambienta: a Holistic Approach to Sustainability:

The investment fund, under Nino Tronchetti Provera's guidance, has adopted a holistic approach towards sustainability, recognizing it as a cross-cutting element across different industries. Unlike many funds that only focus their attention on reducing greenhouse gas emissions or transitioning to clean energy, Ambienta takes a broader view of sustainability. Infact they analyze the economy as a whole and invest in companies where sustainability is not just a moral obligation but also and epecially a competitive advantage.

The Importance of "What" over "How":

Tronchetti Provera emphasizes the importance of "what" a company can offer in terms of environmental benefits instead of just "how" it is managed internally. While obvioulsy environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors are critical in evaluating a company's ethical practices, they don't necessarily guarantee competitiveness. Tronchetti suggests that a company that thinks beyond conventional ESG norms, and so anticipate future trends, and offer innovative solutions can outperform the competition.

Early Vision & Influence:

Nino Tronchetti Provera's early interest in sustainability can be traced back to his academic (and in particular university) years. In 1992, he wrote a thesis titled "La compatibilità ambientale, un vincolo e un'opportunità per lo sviluppo delle aziende" (in english: Environmental compatibility, a constraint, and an opportunity for business development). At that time, environmental topics were not mainstream business world, but he was ahead of the curve for the 90s.

Founding of Ambienta:

The significant step towards sustainable investment came in 2007 when Ambienta was founded. Nino Tronchetti Provera and Fabio Ranghino, the first hire who is now a partner and strategy head, launched the fund with the vision of making a positive impact on the environment and profitability.

The Growth of Ambienta:

Since its creation, Ambienta has made remarkable progress over a short time frame. The fund's investments span across various sectors, including water infrastructure, digital solutions, and circular economy projects, (such as Previero's plastic recycling machines). They've also played a role in developing eco-friendly alternatives, like water-based paints used by IKEA.

"Ambienta Credit": the Future:

Ambienta recently introduced Ambienta Credit, an evolution of their strategy. This branch will focus on supporting "environmental excellence" in companies. These are not companies for sale but ones that Ambienta knows well and can provide financial aid.

Wrapping it up:

To summarize in brief: Nino Tronchetti Provera's journey, from his early academic interest in environmental compatibility to the creation of Ambienta, reflects a growing recognition of the pivotal role sustainability plays in the current business world. As the global economy continues to expand, it's claerly becoming increasingly important that traditional business models must adapt to incorporate sustainable practices to thrive in the future and actually make positive impact. By strategically investing in sustainable European companies across various sectors, Ambienta is not only contributing to a more environmentally responsible world but also gaining the rewards of being at the avanguard of this economic and environmental revolution.
