Premise:
I was told of the storm the last day I was at the sea by my mom, a person who tends to always exaggerate things as every precautious mom does. When I came back the day after, I realized this time she wasn't exaggerating. It seemed an apocalyptic movie scenario: broken traffic lights, streets blocked by trees and trash that were swept by the wind, and above, desert roads filled with both damaged cars and a huge sensation of fear, desolation, and paralyzation.
Intro:
One week after this unprecedented storm hit Milan in the middle of the night, the city is fortunately quickly recovering. Mayor Giuseppe Sala has given an initial assessment of the damage, while stressing on the importance of coming together to face this tough challenge. The request for urgent collective help from the government shows a thing that made me proud: Milan's strong commitment start collectively fighting for making sustainable future a reality and not a hope anymore.
Promise to bring back Normal Life:
Mayor Sala mentioned that the damage is estimated at around 50 million euros, but he also said this could change. The main goal is still the same: to get Milan back to normal by the end of August.
Fixing the Transportation System:
The natural disaster really hurt the city's public transportation system, especially the electrical parts. The local authorities and a lot of young volunteers are working hard to remove trees from the roads to get the city running smoothly again. This endeavor should create food for thought for innovative solutions in the area of transportation, emphasizing sustainability and exploring alternative methods that are both more resistant to phisical risks.
Keeping People and Public Spaces Safe
Beyond the scope of transportation, Milan's concerted efforts extend to ensuring the safety of its citizens and preserving its essential structures. The well-being of the people and the integrity of public spaces has the priority in these difficult times. Also, fortunately, only a limited number of educational institutions suffered significant harm.
Unwrapping the Meteorological Complexity behind the Event:
In a nutshell, it is scientifically proven that the calamity originated because warm and cold air met. This clash of atmospheric elements in the air caused strong rain, hail, and really strong winds that put Milan literally KO in one single night.
A call for a sustainable future for Italy:
Milan is coming back after the deluge, showing unity and strength. Everyone is working hard to fix things and make the city better for the future. I hope this horrific situation will finally start to make us even more determined to make Milan a safe and eco-friendly haven metropoli. This current collective effort must continue in the future in the whole country and eventually become an entrenched habit.
